Week 2

Web 2.0 and social media marketing

Reminiscing my days as a child in awe of technology and how it all works, I remembered sitting by my Dad as I observed precariously as he connected the computer to a landline for the internet. In hindsight, was I witnessing the remaining years of ‘Web 1.0’? If there were ever such a term.

As we speak right now, we’re living in the modern day of Web 2.0. It is a framework, a concept of sorts on how data is mashed intricately to better all aspects of today.

How it serves us is different for all, or rather how we choose to harness it for our own benefits. With that Web 2.0 brings fourth high expectations, by linking our personal data to what we see on our social media platforms feed to us.

But just how much is too much, as mentioned earlier in a short span of just 2 decades It has grown significantly and if left unchecked, where will it go next? Dramatically pushing interoperability, meaning merging the internet and reality.

I for one think some restrains should be exercised and so as to keep using the Internet for ‘good’.

Will we come to a point where it will be too late for a U-turn all in the name of benefitting mankind. Paranoid? maybe, but cautious, yes. As machine and AI learning is continuously churning in the background 24/7 to better understand our buying, choosing patterns. In fact, Amazon tried a service where they would send you items even if you did not order it, based on your frequency and buying patterns. It is called predictive shipping.

So it brings back the question to light, when will enough be enough. And how do we keep the internet safe and intelligent from a consumer stand point, that will be the answer all brands will race towards to find out, to be the winning choice for us.

  1. I guess most of these companies are just trying their best to provide personalised services to their customers. Being able to cater to specific wants of their customers. Good thought-provoking post!

    1. Yes, they are all trying to be the winning choice for us, and are bound to bump into mistakes here and there. Nonetheless for their benefit and the consumers, but some mistakes may be too grave! Thank you for comment!

  2. I think this article posed some really important questions that we should all think about as consumers! Given the power of internet technology and it’s trend in the past decade, if we do not do anything about and leave it just as it is, it’s definitely easy for things to go out of control.

    1. Yes indeed! I agree with you too, some forward thinking needs to be exercised right now before we just mindlessly chase this technology and hit a spot we wish we didnt. Thank you for your comment!

  3. I like how this post portrayed the blurred boundary line between our personal space and consumerism, where technology has slowly invaded and seemingly taking control of telling of what we think we want for our lives. Are we having control over our purchases online, or is online consumerism having control over us?

    1. Yes I agree with you, technology is definitely good and have contributed so much to mankind. But blurred lines between privacy and just what corporations feel they could enter to, ‘make our lives better’, and most of the time we do not read the fine prints! Have you received any mails you wish would just stop because of the sheer irrelevance of it to your life. Thank you for your comment!
